Colin has a very nice daily life: he is abundant, he enjoys the meals his cook dinner can make (Nicolas), he enjoys his pianocktail (contraction of piano and cocktail, a term invented by Vian) and his friend Chick. Just one working day while owning lunch with Chick, Chick tells him that he fulfilled a girl named Alise with whom he has a widespread passion: the author Jean-Sol Partre (a spoonerism of Jean-Paul Sartre who was Boris Vian’s friend). Colin fulfills Chloe at a get together Chick invited him to. They drop in appreciate, marry, but Chloe results in being sick in the course of their honeymoon. As time passes, Chloe’s situation deteriorates while the romance in between Chick and Alise turns sour.
